Field of Heroes events return to Westerville

WESTERVILLE – 2022 marks the return of all events to the annual Field of Heroes, after a two-year hiatus.

More than 3,000 flags will be displayed at the Westerville Sports Complex at 325 N. Cleveland Ave. between May 27 and May 30. The event has been a Memorial Day tradition in Westerville since 2008.

The process of installing flags begins around 9 a.m. Friday and will continue through the afternoon.

Returning to the event this year are the tribute area, education tent, a Saturday evening performance by the Westerville Concert Band, a Sunday evening “Voices of Westerville” program, a flag retirement ceremony and a closing ceremony on Monday.

The 5k takes participants along paved recreation paths, among the flags at the Westerville Sports Complex and through Fire Station 111. The race begins at 8 a.m. Sunday.

Friday, May 27

  • 6 P.M. – Bagpipe Serenade
  • 8:30 P.M. – Taps” | Field Illuminated Until Dawn
  • 10:30 P.M. – Flag and Challenge Coin Sales Close

Saturday, May 28

  • 12 P.M. – Reading of Names on Dedicated Flags
  • 7 P.M. – Free Concert: Featuring the Westerville Community Concert Band
  • 8:30 P.M. – Echo “Taps” | Field Illuminated Until Dawn
  • 10:30 P.M. – Flag and Challenge Coin Sales Close

Sunday, May 29

  • 8 A.M. – Field of Heroes 5K Run/Walk Presented by Ohio Health
  • 12:00 P.M. – Reading of Names on Dedicated Flags
  • 3:45 P.M. – Bagpipe Serenade Prelude to Flag Retirement Ceremony
  • 4 P.M. – Flag Retirement Ceremony Led by BSA Honor Guard
  • 7 P.M. – “Voices of Westerville” Program
  • 8:30 P.M. – “Taps” | Field Illuminated Until Dawn
  • 10:30 P.M. – Flag and Challenge Coin Sales Close

Monday, May 30

  • 11 A.M. – Flag Sales Close for Event
  • 12 P.M. – Reading of Names on Dedicated Flags
  • 12:30 P.M. – Official Closing Ceremony
  • 1:30 – 3:30 P.M. – Flag Pick-Up | Immediately Following Closing Ceremony
